The Problem

Mosquito Eggs Require Standing Water to Hatch Into Successful Larvae

  • An adult female lays about 100-400 eggs in clusters called rafts, which float on the surface of the water.
  • All mosquitoes must have water to complete their life cycle.
  • Mosquitoes breed in stagnant, standing water – as little as a teaspoon or bottle cap of water standing for more than a week is enough for eggs to develop into adult mosquitoes.
  • Mosquito larvae feed on organic matter in stagnant water and breathe oxygen from the surface.

The Threat

Mosquito-Borne Diseases

  • Zika Virus

    • Zika virus is spread mostly by the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. These mosquitoes are aggressive daytime biters, but can also bite at night.
    • The virus can be passed from a pregnant woman to her fetus. Infection during pregnancy can cause certain birth defects.
    • There is no vaccine or medicine for Zika.
    • Symptoms include fever, rash, joint pain and conjunctivitis. Other symptoms may include muscle pain or headache.
  • Heartworm

    • Heartworm disease is a serious and potentially fatal disease most commonly found in dogs and cats that live in the heart, lungs and associated blood vessels.
    • The disease, transmitted by infected mosquitos, can also be found in ferrets, wolves, coyotes, and foxes and in rare cases, humans.
    • Signs include a mild persistent cough, fatigue, decreased appetite and weight loss.
  • West Nile Virus

    • West Nile virus (WNV) is the leading cause of arbovirus encephalitis in horses and humans in the United States.
    • The virus has been identified in the entire continental United States, most of Canada and Mexico.
    • The case fatality rate for horses exhibiting clinical signs of WNV infection is approximately 33%.
    • Most humans (70-80%) who become infected with West Nile virus do not develop any symptoms
  • Dengue Fever

    • Dengue Fever is caused by any one of four related Dengue viruses transmitted to humans by the bite of an infected mosquito.
    • The Aedes aegypti mosquito is the most important transmitter or vector of dengue viruses in the Western Hemisphere.
    • Symptoms include high fever, sever headache, severe pain behind the eyes, joint pain, muscle and bone pain, rash and mild bleeding (e.g., nose or gums bleed, easy bruising)
